Description

This Marinated Mozzarella Balls recipe features bite-sized mozzarella balls immersed in a flavorful blend of olive oil, fresh herbs, garlic, lemon, and spices. Perfect as an appetizer or snack, it requires minimal prep time and offers a fresh, zesty taste that intensifies when marinated for a few hours.

Ingredients

Marinade

  • 3 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large garlic clove, grated
  • 1 teaspoon Italian herb seasoning or oregano
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh chopped parsley
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh chopped basil
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • ½ lemon, juice and zest

Main Ingredient

  • 2 cups (300 grams) baby mozzarella balls, drained

Instructions

  1. Prepare the marinade: Combine olive oil, grated garlic, Italian herb seasoning or oregano, chopped parsley and basil, sea salt, chili flakes (if using), lemon juice, and lemon zest in a jar with a lid or a mixing bowl. Shake or whisk the mixture until all ingredients are well blended.
  2. Marinate the mozzarella balls: Drain the baby mozzarella balls thoroughly. Place them in a mixing bowl and gently toss with the prepared marinade until evenly coated. Taste the mixture and add more seasoning if needed, then toss again to distribute the flavors.
  3. Let flavors meld: Although you can serve the mozzarella immediately, for the best flavor, cover and refrigerate the marinated mozzarella balls for at least 1 to 2 hours before serving to allow the herbs and lemon to infuse.
  4. Storage and serving: Store the marinated mozzarella balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Before serving, bring them to room temperature and enjoy with crusty bread for a delightful appetizer or snack.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, increase the amount of chili flakes according to taste.
  • Use fresh herbs whenever possible for the best flavor.
  • Marinating longer than 2 hours will deepen the flavor but avoid beyond 24 hours to maintain mozzarella texture.
  • This recipe is great to prepare ahead of time for gatherings or parties.
  • Serve with crusty bread, crackers, or as part of a charcuterie board.
