Description

This homemade slow cooker hot chocolate recipe delivers a rich, creamy, and indulgent beverage perfect for cozying up on chilly days. Combining whole milk, heavy cream, semi-sweet chocolate, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract, it simmers gently in a slow cooker to meld flavors beautifully with minimal effort. Topped with classic marshmallows or your favorite garnishes, it’s a comforting treat for the whole family.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 6 cups (1440ml) whole milk (or skim, 1%, or 2% milk)
  • 2 cups (480ml) heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 8 ounces (226g) semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cup (21g) unsweetened natural cocoa powder or dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Toppings (Optional)

  • Marshmallows
  • Whipped cream
  • Candy canes
  • Salted caramel

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Place all of the main ingredients into a large slow cooker. Vigorously whisk the mixture to incorporate the cocoa powder fully and avoid any lumps or floating powder. Continue whisking for 1-2 minutes until everything is well combined.
  2. Cook the Hot Chocolate: Set the slow cooker to low and cook for 5 hours or choose the high setting and cook for 3 hours. During cooking, whisk the mixture every 45 minutes to an hour to prevent the chocolate from burning or sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  3. Serve: After cooking, ladle the hot chocolate into mugs. Add your preferred toppings such as marshmallows, whipped cream, candy canes, or salted caramel to enhance flavor and presentation.
  4. Store Leftovers: Pour any remaining hot chocolate into a container and refrigerate. When ready to enjoy again, warm it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.

Notes

  • Whisking regularly during cooking is essential to prevent scorching and ensure a smooth texture.
  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar based on your taste preference.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute milk and cream with plant-based alternatives like almond or oat milk.
  • Leftover hot chocolate keeps well refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Customize toppings to suit your taste or dietary needs.
