Description

This Easy Strawberry and Apple Crumble is a delightful fruit dessert combining fresh strawberries and apples with a crunchy oat and brown sugar topping. Baked to golden perfection, it’s a comforting treat perfect for any occasion and serves six generously.

Ingredients

Fruit Filling

  • 2.2 pounds (1 kilo) fresh strawberries
  • 1 apple
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (100g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup (80g) old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (100g) light brown sugar
  • ½ cup (113g) butter (or block margarine), melted
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (180°C) so it’s ready when your crumble mixture is prepared.
  2. Make the Crumble Topping: In a large mixing bowl, combine old-fashioned oats, all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, salt, and melted butter. Stir until all ingredients are evenly incorporated. Use your hands to form clumps of varying sizes to create texture in the topping. Set this bowl aside.
  3. Prepare the Fruit Filling: Peel, core, and chop the apple into chunks. Wash and cut the strawberries into halves or quarters depending on their size. Place all the fruit into a large bowl.
  4. Add Thickener and Sweetener: To the fruit, add all-purpose flour, regular sugar, and vanilla extract. Stir gently but thoroughly to ensure the flour and sugar coat the fruit evenly; this will help thicken the juices during baking.
  5. Assemble the Crumble: Transfer the mixed fruit into a baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the prepared crumble topping evenly over the fruit layer.
  6. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes. Look for a light golden-brown crumble and bubbling edges as signs it’s done. Keep an eye after 30 minutes since ovens can vary.
  7. Cool Before Serving: Remove from oven and let the crumble cool for 20-25 minutes to allow the filling to set slightly and avoid burning your mouth.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: Serve warm on its own or with cream, custard, or ice cream. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Notes

  • For a softer texture, grate the apple instead of chopping it.
  • You can substitute butter with margarine for a dairy-free option.
  • Adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract enhances the flavor of the filling.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or custard for a classic dessert experience.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and consume within 4 days.
