Description

This Dorito Taco Salad combines the classic flavors of a taco with the crunchy, cheesy goodness of Nacho Cheese Doritos for a quick and delicious meal or party dish. Ground beef seasoned with taco spices is mixed with fresh iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and shredded cheddar cheese, then tossed with Catalina dressing and topped with crushed Doritos for an irresistible tex-mex inspired salad perfect for casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Salad Ingredients

  • 1 head Iceberg Lettuce, shredded
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded

Meat and Seasoning

  • 1 ½ pounds hamburger, browned and grease drained
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or 3 tablespoons homemade taco seasoning)

Dressing and Toppings

  • 16 ounces Catalina dressing (1 bottle)
  • 15.5 ounces Nacho Cheese Doritos, crushed (1 bag)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Hamburger: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the hamburger meat until fully cooked and no pink remains. Drain off any excess grease to keep the salad from becoming oily. Add the packet of taco seasoning to the meat, stir well, and finish cooking according to the seasoning packet instructions to evenly coat the meat with spices.
  2. Combine Salad Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the browned and seasoned hamburger with shredded iceberg lettuce, chopped tomatoes, chopped onion, and shredded cheddar cheese. Toss gently to combine all the ingredients. Cover and refrigerate the salad mixture until you are ready to serve to keep it fresh and chilled.
  3. Add Dressing and Doritos Before Serving: Just before serving, pour the Catalina dressing over the salad and toss thoroughly to coat all ingredients evenly. Finally, add the crushed Nacho Cheese Doritos and gently mix them in, preserving some Dorito crunch while distributing their cheesy flavor throughout the salad.

Notes

  • For a healthier version, use lean ground beef or substitute ground turkey.
  • Homemade taco seasoning can include chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt.
  • If preparing ahead, add the Doritos right before serving to keep them crispy.
  • For extra freshness, add diced avocado or cilantro at the end.
  • Feel free to swap Catalina dressing for ranch or your favorite taco dressing for a different flavor.
