Ingredients
Crust
- 1 (8-ounce) package refrigerated crescent rolls
Filling
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 8 large eggs
- 1 1/4 cups 2% milk
- 3/4 teaspoon Kosher salt (or 1/2 teaspoon table salt)
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 to 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese (can substitute with cheddar or mozzarella if preferred)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray to ensure the casserole doesn’t stick.
- Prepare Crescent Roll Base: Unroll the refrigerated crescent roll dough and press it into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pinch the seams together to seal and press the dough up the sides slightly if there is excess. Bake this crust for 5 minutes to set.
- Cook Sausage: While the crust bakes, heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the breakfast sausage, breaking it apart with a spatula until fully browned and cooked through. Transfer the cooked sausage to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease.
- Mix Egg Mixture: In a large bowl, beat the 8 eggs thoroughly. Add the 1 1/4 cups of 2% milk, Kosher salt, garlic powder, and ground black pepper, then whisk until the mixture is well combined.
- Assemble Casserole: Sprinkle the cooked sausage evenly over the pre-baked crescent roll base. Then layer the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses evenly on top of the sausage layer. Finally, pour the egg mixture evenly over the entire casserole.
- Bake: Place the assembled casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the egg is fully set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes after baking to let it set before slicing and serving.
Notes
- You can substitute the shredded Monterey Jack cheese with cheddar or mozzarella based on your preference.
- For a lower-fat option, use lean breakfast sausage and low-fat milk.
- If you prefer, you can add vegetables like diced bell peppers or onions to the sausage for extra flavor and nutrition.
- Letting the casserole cool slightly before serving helps it hold its shape when sliced.
- This casserole can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated; just bake it fresh the next morning.
