Description

Experience a vibrant and refreshing drink with this Butterfly Pea Tea recipe, also known as Blue Tea. Using dried butterfly pea flowers steeped in hot water, this naturally caffeine-free tea offers a stunning blue color that can be transformed to purple with a splash of lime or lemon juice. Sweeten to taste with sugar, simple syrup, or honey for a perfect, cooling beverage that’s ideal for hot days or anytime you want a visually captivating and healthy drink.

Ingredients

Butterfly Pea Tea Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup dried butterfly pea flowers
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 glasses ice
  • Sugar or simple syrup or honey, to taste
  • Lime juice or lemon juice, to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil Water: Boil 2 cups of water in a kettle to prepare the base for your tea.
  2. Steep Flowers: Transfer the boiling water to a medium or large heatproof container, like a Pyrex measuring cup, and add the dried butterfly pea flowers.
  3. Extract Color: Stir the flowers gently with a spoon, pressing them against the cup to release their vibrant blue color. Continue pressing for several minutes until the tea achieves a dark blue hue.
  4. Strain Tea: Use a mesh strainer to remove and discard the flowers, leaving a clear blue liquid behind.
  5. Sweeten and Flavor: Add sugar, simple syrup, or honey to your preferred sweetness, and optionally add lemon or lime juice to alter the color and add a bright citrus flavor.
  6. Prepare Glasses: Fill two glasses with ice to chill your tea.
  7. Serve: Pour the butterfly pea tea over the ice in the glasses and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Adding lemon or lime juice transforms the blue tea to a striking purple color due to the tea’s pH sensitivity.
  • Adjust sweetness according to taste; options include sugar, honey, or simple syrup.
  • This tea is naturally caffeine-free and rich in antioxidants.
  • Serve immediately for best flavor and color vibrancy.
  • Butterfly pea flowers can be found at specialty tea shops or online stores.
