Description

A refreshing and aromatic Spiced Orange Apple Cider Sangria combining crisp white wine, apple cider, and a homemade orange spiced simple syrup with fresh fruit and warm spices. Perfect for fall gatherings or any festive occasion.

Ingredients

Sangria

  • 1 bottle white wine
  • 2 1/2 cups apple cider
  • 1/3 cup Grand Marnier
  • 3/4 cup orange spiced simple syrup (use 1/2 cup if you prefer less sweet)
  • 1 honeycrisp apple, thinly sliced, plus extra for garnish
  • 1 navel orange, thinly sliced
  • 3 cinnamon sticks, plus extra for garnish

Orange Spiced Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 2-3 inch piece orange peel (avoid the white pith as much as possible)

Instructions

  1. Make the Orange Spiced Simple Syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine water, sugar, orange peel, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, stir and reduce heat to let it simmer for 1-2 minutes to infuse the flavors. Remove the pan from heat and allow the syrup to cool completely. Once cooled, strain out and discard the orange peel, star anise, and cinnamon sticks.
  2. Combine the Sangria Ingredients: In a large pitcher, pour in the white wine, apple cider, Grand Marnier, and 3/4 cup of the prepared orange spiced simple syrup (or start with 1/2 cup if you prefer it less sweet). Add the thinly sliced honeycrisp apple and navel orange along with 3 cinnamon sticks. Stir everything gently to combine all the flavors.
  3. Chill and Serve: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate the sangria for 2-4 hours to let the flavors meld. Alternatively, you can serve it immediately over crushed ice. For an extra touch, garnish with additional apple slices and cinnamon sticks before serving.

Notes

  • The orange spiced simple syrup can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to one week.
  • Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of simple syrup added to the sangria.
  • Use a dry white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio for best results.
  • The sangria tastes even better after resting and chilling for several hours as it allows the flavors to fully blend.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute white wine and Grand Marnier with additional apple cider or sparkling cider.
