Description

This Smashburger Classic Smash Easy Copycat Recipe recreates the iconic crispy, juicy Smashburger experience at home with simple ingredients and straightforward steps. Featuring freshly smashed beef patties cooked to crispy perfection, topped with melty American cheese, tangy homemade Smash Sauce, and fresh toppings on toasted potato buns, this recipe serves up a delicious, diner-style burger in about 35 minutes.

Ingredients

Smash Sauce

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon pickle juice
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped dill pickle
  • 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil

Burger Seasoning Blend

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt

Burgers and Assembly

  • 1 1/4 pound ground chuck
  • 3 tablespoons butter (divided use)
  • 4 potato buns (split)
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 12 dill crinkle-cut pickle chips
  • 8 thin slices red onion
  • 8 thin tomato slices
  • 4 lettuce leaves

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Smash Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, yellow mustard, pickle juice, finely chopped dill pickle, and vegetable oil. Mix well until all ingredients are incorporated and set aside to let the flavors meld.
  2. Make the Burger Seasoning: In another small bowl, whisk together the kosher salt, ground black pepper, and seasoned salt to create a seasoned blend that will enhance the burger patties.
  3. Form the Patties: Divide the ground chuck evenly into four portions and roll each loosely into a ball, avoiding compacting the meat too tightly. Lightly season the outside of each meatball with a pinch of the seasoning blend.
  4. Toast the Buns: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the split potato buns cut-side down in the skillet and toast them for 30 seconds to 3 minutes until they are lightly browned and crisp. Remove and set aside.
  5. Cook the Burgers – First Side: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large, very hot skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add two beef balls to the pan. Immediately smash each ball firmly with a sturdy metal spatula or a smaller foil-wrapped skillet for about 10 seconds to form thin patties. Sprinkle the patties with additional seasoning blend and cook for 60 to 90 seconds until juices bubble through and a deep, rich crust forms.
  6. Cook the Burgers – Second Side and Cheese: Flip the patties carefully with a spatula, scraping all the browned bits off the pan to incorporate flavor. Season the other side with seasoning blend, then top each patty with a slice of American cheese. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes more until cheese melts and the burgers reach your preferred doneness. Remove patties and keep warm.
  7. Repeat Cooking for Remaining Patties: Repeat the cooking process with the last tablespoon of butter and the remaining two beef balls following the same smashing and searing steps.
  8. Assemble the Smashburgers: Spread about 2 teaspoons of the prepared Smash Sauce onto the cut side of each toasted bun, followed by 2 teaspoons of ketchup. Place a cooked patty on the bottom bun, then layer with 3 dill pickle chips, 2 slices of red onion, 2 slices of tomato, and a lettuce leaf. Finish by covering with the top bun and serve immediately for the best enjoyment.

Notes

  • Use a cast iron skillet or griddle for best crust formation; nonstick pans will not develop the classic crispy edges.
  • Do not overpack the beef balls to keep patties tender and juicy.
  • Adjust seasoning amounts to taste, especially if you prefer less salt.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the contrast between crispy burger edges and melty cheese.
  • Can be customized with additional toppings like bacon or different cheeses as desired.
