Description
This homemade recipe replicates the soft, buttery, and garlicky Olive Garden breadsticks that are perfect as a side or snack. Made from scratch with simple ingredients, these breadsticks are fluffy on the inside with a golden crust and brushed with a flavorful garlic butter topping.
Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 package)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 4 1/4 cups bread flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Topping Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the sugar, active dry yeast, and warm water (110 degrees F). Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Mix the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the bread flour and salt. Add the foamy yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of melted butter into the flour mixture. Stir until the dough starts to clump together and form a ball.
- Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Shape the dough: Form the dough into a square shape on your counter. Divide it evenly into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a breadstick shape approximately the length and thickness typical of Olive Garden breadsticks.
- Let dough rise: Place the breadsticks side by side on a lined baking sheet. Cover them loosely with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let them rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes until they have puffed up.
- Preheat oven and bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the breadsticks for approximately 12 minutes or until they are lightly browned on top.
- Prepare garlic butter topping: While the breadsticks bake, mix together 1/4 cup melted butter and 1 teaspoon garlic salt in a small bowl.
- Brush and serve: Immediately after removing the breadsticks from the oven, brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture. Allow them to cool slightly before serving to enjoy the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Make sure the water is not too hot or it can kill the yeast; ideally 110°F.
- For extra softness, you can cover the dough with a damp towel while rising to prevent it from drying out.
- You can use regular all-purpose flour but bread flour yields a chewier texture.
- Brush garlic butter again after baking for stronger flavor if desired.
- Breadsticks are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven wrapped in foil for a few minutes.
