Description

Hamburger Steaks in Creamy Dill Sauce is a comforting, hearty main-course dish featuring tender homemade hamburger patties simmered in a rich, velvety dill-infused cream sauce. With savory onions and just the right touch of fresh dill, this quick dinner comes together in just 30 minutes for a satisfying meal that balances classic flavors with an herby twist.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 yellow onion, grated
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg

For the Creamy Dill Sauce

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill (plus more for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Steak Mixture: In a large bowl, grate the onion. Add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, heavy cream, and egg. Mix by hand until just combined. Avoid over-mixing to keep the patties tender.
  2. Shape the Patties: Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten each ball to about ¾ inch (2 cm) thick using your palm or a spatula. Set the patties aside.
  3. Prep the Aromatics: Finely dice the remaining onion, mince the garlic, and chop the dill for the sauce. Set aside.
  4. Sear the Hamburger Steaks: Heat the olive oil and butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown. Transfer the cooked patties to a plate.
  5. Start the Sauce Base: In the same skillet, add the diced onion and minced garlic. Reduce heat to low and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring until fragrant.
  6. Build the Sauce: Sprinkle in the salt, black pepper, and flour. Stir well, letting the flour absorb the fat. Pour in the chicken broth and simmer for about 2 minutes, scraping up the browned bits from the skillet to build flavor.
  7. Finish the Sauce: Add the heavy cream and chopped dill. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Simmer the Patties: Return the hamburger steaks to the pan, nestling them into the sauce. Simmer for 5-6 minutes until heated through and fully cooked in the center.
  9. Serve: Spoon extra sauce over the patties, sprinkle with more fresh dill and freshly ground pepper, and serve hot.

Notes

  • For a lighter sauce, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream.
  • Turkey or chicken can be used in place of beef for a leaner option.
  • Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour to make this recipe gluten-free.
  • Fresh dill is best, but dried dill can be used in a pinch (use 2 teaspoons).
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
