Description

Experience a visually stunning and refreshing butterfly pea flower matcha lemonade that magically changes color from blue to purple when layered. This vibrant drink combines the floral notes of butterfly pea flower tea, the tart brightness of homemade lemonade, and the earthy depth of chilled matcha, perfect for a revitalizing and unique beverage.

Ingredients

Lemonade Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice (from 1 lemon)

Butterfly Pea Flower Tea Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons dried butterfly pea flowers
  • 1 cup hot water

Matcha Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons matcha powder
  • 1 cup cold water

Instructions

  1. Make Lemonade: In a saucepan, combine 1 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar and bring to a boil to create a simple syrup. Reduce heat and simmer for about 3 minutes until the sugar fully dissolves. Remove from heat, allow to cool, then stir in 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  2. Make Butterfly Pea Flower Tea: Steep 2 teaspoons of dried butterfly pea flowers in 1 cup of hot water for 3-5 minutes, depending on desired color intensity. Once steeped, remove and discard the flowers and let the tea cool to room temperature.
  3. Make Matcha: In a wide-mouth bottle, combine 2 teaspoons matcha powder with 1 cup cold water. Seal the bottle and shake vigorously for 10 seconds until well blended.
  4. Assemble Drink: Fill two glasses with ice. Pour butterfly pea flower tea to about one-third full, then add lemonade until the glass is roughly two-thirds full. Finally, gently pour the matcha on top to create a layered effect. Stir well before drinking to blend the flavors and watch the color shift from blue to purple.

Notes

  • Extra lemonade is made with this recipe; store leftovers refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Both the lemonade and butterfly pea flower tea can be prepared in advance and chilled to save time.
  • Use a tall, clear glass to fully appreciate the stunning color change effect.
  • Adjust sweetness by varying sugar in the lemonade syrup if desired.
