Description

Enjoy a crispy, delicious treat with these Air Fryer Apple Fries. Thinly sliced Granny Smith apples are coated in a spiced flour and egg batter, air fried to golden perfection, and dusted with cinnamon sugar. Served with a sweet vanilla glaze, these apple fries make a perfect healthy snack or dessert ready in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Apples

  • 2 large Granny Smith apples

Batter

  • 1 cup all purpose flour (130 grams)
  • 1 tablespoon apple pie spice
  • 3 large eggs

Toppings

  • 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar
  • cooking spray or oil in a spray bottle

Vanilla Icing

  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons whole milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: Peel the Granny Smith apples and slice them into thin strips using a sharp knife or fry cutter. Set aside.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a small bowl, combine the all-purpose flour with apple pie spice and whisk thoroughly.
  3. Whisk the eggs: In a separate dish, beat the eggs until smooth and set aside.
  4. Coat the apple fries – first flour: In small batches, toss the apple slices into the spiced flour mixture. Use a slotted spoon to scoop them out and shake off excess flour.
  5. Dip in egg and recoat: Dip the floured apple strips into the whisked eggs, shake off excess egg, then return them to the flour mixture and coat again, shaking off extra flour to ensure a light coating that crisps well.
  6. Arrange for frying: Place the coated apple fries on a wire rack lined with parchment paper to catch extra flour, making cleanup easier.
  7. Preheat air fryer: Set your air fryer to 325ºF (163ºC) and preheat.
  8. Prepare air fryer basket: Generously spray the bottom of the air fryer basket with cooking spray or oil. Arrange the apple fries so they do not overlap. Spray the tops with additional cooking oil.
  9. Air fry first side: Cook the apple fries for 5 minutes at 325ºF, then carefully turn them over.
  10. Air fry second side: Spray the tops with cooking oil again and cook for an additional 5 minutes until golden and crispy.
  11. Add cinnamon sugar: Remove the fries and place them on a cooling rack or basket. While still hot, immediately sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar to ensure it sticks well.
  12. Repeat cooking: Continue cooking additional batches of apple fries following the same process and toss them with cinnamon sugar while warm.
  13. Make the vanilla glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together confectioners sugar, vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of milk. Add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the glaze reaches desired consistency.
  14. Serve: Serve the apple fries immediately, either drizzled with the vanilla glaze or with it on the side as a dipping sauce for extra sweetness.

Notes

  • Ensure to shake off excess flour after coating to achieve maximum crispiness.
  • Use Granny Smith apples for tartness that balances the sweet coatings.
  • Cooking spray or oil helps the fries crisp up in the air fryer without sticking.
  • Serve fries hot to enjoy the best texture and flavor.
  • Vanilla glaze sweetness can be adjusted by milk amount to your preference.
